襄渝铁路是我国在特殊历史条件下，采取特殊的组织形式进行修建的一条战备铁路，也是我省当时的第二条出省通道。其修建地域环境之艰苦 工程量之大 以及修建时间之短可以说是世界罕见。当时南充地区由九个县（市）共抽调了五万余人组成南充民兵师参加了了其西段的建设。这条铁路的建成不仅改善了我国西南和中南地区的交通，尤其是对西南地区的经济发展起了重要作用，而更重要的还在于它给我们留下了许多值得思考的经验和不怕苦 不怕死的“巴山健身”。
