阆中古城的建筑风格与云南丽江大研古镇，甚至是平遥古城有着许多十分相似之处，呈棋盘式的古城格局

八十年代初期，当地才注重文物保护，得以保留古城的一小部分，不过阆中古城仍然是四川省保存最好的古城，也是全国现存最为完好的四大古城之一，唐、宋、元、明、清各历史时期的古街、古院落、寺院、楼阁、摩岩石刻成为古城最有价值的参观景观。

阆中古城以前的面积更大，可惜在文革期间和八十年代之前，被拆除了一大半，仅剩下沿着嘉陵江一带古城保存完好。

现在的阆中古城和阆中新城几乎合为一体，唯一的区分就是一边是现代的小楼，一般是青砖黑瓦的老房子。
