营山古县地三元乡，（现已并入太蓬乡）位于营山县东北部，距县城55公里。
南朝梁大同年间（公元535-546年）在老君山下的兴福寺处设置绥安县，意即安抚、安定，该县先后更名为咸安县、蓬山县（因境内有大小蓬山而得名）。宋熙宁三年（公元1070年）降蓬山县为镇，并入营山县。熙宁五年（公元1072年）蓬山镇被撤，同治九年（1870年）在此地建滴水场，后因刘、龙、廖三姓人氏倡议兴场，遂更名为三元场。
此地因三河（消水河、芭蕉河、水口河）汇聚、三山（狮子山、廖家山、老君山）绵延、三姓（刘、龙、廖）结义兴场而得名，为营山境内最早置县的地方之一。
